Texan Voters Criticize How Authorities Handle Cannabis, Reveals Survey

A recent survey of registered voters in Texas identified that a significant portion of the population disapproves of how state authorities have been handling laws on cannabis and THC. 

The survey was conducted by the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas and released in February 2026, reflecting perceptions amid the start of the electoral cycle in the state. The data shows that many voters are dissatisfied with the current policies.


Survey in Texas: Disapproval of Cannabis and THC Policies


In total, 40% of the surveyed voters said they disapprove of how state authorities have been handling laws on cannabis and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). In comparison, 29% stated approval of this handling, and 31% said they had no definite opinion.


The survey was conducted with 1,300 registered voters between February 2 and 16, 2026, with a margin of error of about 2.7 percentage points.


Party Division in Opinions on Cannabis in Texas


The survey also shows variations in opinion based on the voters' party identification:
Among Democrats, 60% said they disapprove of how cannabis and THC laws are handled, while 

  • 16% approved of the authorities' management.
  • Among Republicans, 42% said they approved of the handling of these policies, and 24% disapproved.
  • Among independents, 43% stated they had no definite opinion on the matter, with a larger portion being neutral regarding the issue.
     

Survey Context Amid Texas Primaries


The survey was released in the context of the state's primary elections, where voters begin to choose candidates and positions that could influence future legislative decisions, including discussions on reforms in cannabis laws and regulations related to THC.
